Technician A says the HFO-1234 (R-1234yf) low-side service manifold hose uses a 1/2-inch male refrigerant flare nut at each end. Technician B says HFC-134a (R-134a) low-side service manifold hose uses a 14mm O.D quick - coupler. Who is correct?
The accepted standard was R134A or HFC-134A because it has no ozone depletion potential and cooling abilities that are similar (but not identical to) those of the R-12 and R-22 refrigerated refrigerants. Because R152A is slightly less dense than R134A, it can theoretically contribute to a better fuel economy. Is r134a also a HFC, people wonder.
R134a (or HFC-134a) is a non-flammable hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant that was introduced to commercial and industrial applications as an alternative to the R-12 CFC refrigerant. R134a performs similarly to R-12, making it an easy-to-use replacement, and is relatively safe to use as it has an ASHRAE classification of A1.
An interesting aspect of the debate regarding which refrigerant is the best replacement for R-134a may have something to do with cost. “Today R-134a costs about $120 for a 30 lb. cylinder. Righetti et al. [4] compared the performance analysis of HFO1234yf and HC600a with HFC134a at two evaporation temperature and different mass rates. He found that all the three refrigerants are good substitutes of HFC134a but at the same mass flow rate, HFO1234yf exhibits similar performance.
