Yes, but even in Dark Souls 1 riposte did more damage than backstab, and OP was asking which does more in DSII, riposte, backstab or guard break. thanks for trying to help me so far nobody has given a simple straight answer to the question. i guess the only way we can find out the correct answer is to wait and test it ourselves in the game.

Backstab is a right-hand normal attack (left click by default) while at the enemy's back, close to them, while not blocking. People often keep their shield up while circling enemies out of habit, but you cannot backstab while blocking. To parry, you need to be near the enemy and facing them, and they need to be attacking with their weapon.

When I'm using Great Weapons they just wait for me to swinging for like two times. And dodging between my swings. Then they're easily going at my back and backstab me. But when I'm trying to do the same then I'm going too far away from them that I can't even reach them to backstab them until they turn. It's same with mobs most of the time.
